Yesterday the United States Postal Service kicked off Black History Month by introducing a new stamp honoring pioneering writer and activist Charles W. Chesnutt. Duke is the proud publisher of Chesnutt’s most popular and successful book, The Conjure Woman and other Tales. Our edition, edited by none other than Duke University President Richard H. Brodhead, is a perennial bestseller and is used in literature classes all over the country. The Press also published Brodhead’s edition of Chesnutt’s journals. WUNC’s The State of Things featured a show on Chesnutt yesterday.
