Christopher M. Kelty announces the publication of his book, Two Bits: The Cultural Significance of Free Software over at Savage Minds. Two Bits represents an experiment for the Press as we venture into the world of new forms of copyright and online books. With the support of HASTAC, Kelty's book is available free at his website. Readers can download a PDF or they can experiment with "modulating" the book by commenting paragraph by paragraph online. Despite the availability of this free version, Kelty (and the Press) hope readers will still purchase the physical book. Kelty writes, "I’m nonetheless a committed modernist in that I think the book-form has
a quality that no other form of communication has, and it has taken
centuries for that quality to develop." We also have to note with thanks that Kelty calls us "the punkrockingest press ever."
