Executive Editor Courtney Berger

Greetings, SCMSers. I am looking forward to this year’s virtual conference and to the opportunity to connect with folks. Like many of you, at this time last year, I had canceled my trip to Denver (as well as plans for several other spring conferences), and I was adjusting to pandemic life. I had no idea that a year later that I’d still be at home, that virtual conferences would be standard fare, and that the loss and grief associated with this pandemic would stretch into a second year. But here we are, and I am grateful that we have this forum for sharing ideas and scholarship and for the friendship and camaraderie of the SCMS community.

As always, we have a stellar line up of new books in film and media studies for you to check out–including several new books in the Elements and Sign, Storage, Transmission series. I will be attending panels to get a glimpse at what folks are working on right now, and I’m especially excited for the strong line up of panels on environmental media, media technologies, queer and trans* media, and on race and media. Also, I have a new book series in the works with Jen Malkowski and TreaAndrea Russworm called Power Play: Games, Politics, Culture, and so I will be taking a deeper dive into the world of games and gaming studies.

If you would like to connect in person to discuss a book project, I will be holding virtual office hours through our online exhibit on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (3/17- 3/19). Please go to our exhibit page to sign up for a time. You can also submit a proposal through our online portal or send me an email.

If you were hoping to connect with another of our editors about your book project at SCMS, please reach out to them by email. See our editors’ specialties and contact information here and our online submissions guidelines here.
